Artwork: Henna, Dragon with Floral Patterns

Henna Dragon

Posted by Sherrie Thai of Shaire Productions.

It’s been about a decade since I’ve done henna body art professionally. It was a great learning experience–to explore and develop different artistic styles.

Recently, I was asked to participate in a henna project for the Aquanuts Synchronized Swim Team. After a long night of decorative work for others, I was able to create this piece on myself in an hour, freehand, reviving my carpal tunnel. Good times!

Inspiration: Ed Hardy and Christian Audigier

Ed Hardy

If you happen to hit the malls this season, you can’t miss the stylings of the now-infamous tattooist Don Ed Hardy and fashion designer Christian Audigier (formerly of Von Dutch and Affliction Clothing). I admire their artistic talents and marketing genius. Tattoo artwork has become part of mainstream culture in recent years and the partnership of Ed and Christian has elevated the style to star status. The products range from clothing to shoes, perfume, bags, jewelry, and other accessories.

Ed Hardy Dragon Scroll

One of the most impressive displays of Ed Hardy’s talent was at the San Francisco Yerba Buena Center in 2002–a 500 foot long dragon scroll painting–it was beautiful seeing it in person as it became a sensory experience, wrapping around itself like a dragon’s body.

Artwork: Winter and Dragons

Holly Reindeer

As it’s now December, Christmas will soon be upon us. I created Holly Reindeer to celebrate the occasion.

Mountain & Trees

Inspired by the prints of Hiroshige, Mountain & Trees is a wintery illustration that would work well as an e-card. This was created with a few different brush and fine-tip pens. I’ve been exploring minimal color as an accent, not a crutch for the line-work.

Dragon Circle

Dragon Circle is an apparel design soon to be on Zazzle. This was another pen/ink drawing converted in Adobe Illustrator.

TechnoDragon

This creation was bound to happen: I love dragons and adore music. Instead of chasing the Pearl of Wisdom as most eastern dragons do, this one is a new breed–with an affinity towards vinyl records.

This bio-mechanical style dragon was originally created by hand with pen/ink, then scanned and edited in Adobe Illustrator.

Artwork: Dual Dragons

I actually created this dragon design a couple years ago for a 18×24 glass etching–to be placed in a gallery. It was a good 100 hours of work. Unfortunately, the glass etching was accidently destroyed by another’s hand. I was glad to have saved the original design, and thought it was time to give the dragons a new life.

This tribal style artwork was created by hand, then scanned, and digitally colored. The top dragon is created in an Eastern/Asian form, while the bottom dragon is done in a Western style. The inspiration of this piece was personal–growing up Chinese-American and being privy to the two cultures. It’s a duality, but never as one.
