Mavericks Rogue Wave: Bracing for Impact

Mavericks Rogue Wave

February 13, 2010. At the Mavericks Surf Competition, two huge waves hit the beach, knocking dozens of spectators off their feet, causing several injuries, toppling booths, unnerving many (like myself) and sent some unfortunate souls swaying in the water while numerous boxes of equipment were swallowed up–all within a few seconds.

Here are some photos of my visit to the Angel Island Immigration Station near San Francisco. Despite the notion that it was the “Ellis Island of the West”, Angel Island was about “exclusion”, mainly for the many Chinese immigrants. The poetry carved into the walls were visual lamentations of some detained.

Inspiration: JR and Face2Face Project

Face2Face

JR is an urban photographer who creates massive (unauthorized) installation works across the world, creating a wonderful social dialogue. His Face2Face project is particularly conceptual and moving. He placed portraits of Israeli and Palestinian faces side by side, making people realize their similarities as humans–emotion, job, looks, etc–to bring about a peaceful understanding to the varied audiences.

Photo: Woman Looking for Cans in SF Chinatown

Being that my grandma lives in Chinatown, I often visit her, and see a bit of the social environment. This old woman was sifting through the trash, looking for cans to recycle, hoping to make a few extra dollars. In Chinatown, the elderly often have limited English abilities, and being too old to work, rely on government assistance and making money in the humblest of ways.

Inspirations: Art & Life

I became inspired today by two very different artists. In Talib Kweli’s “Listen” music video, the urban art of Kofie is incorporated as motion graphics. The video is a few years old, but the artwork is still hip and vibrant. Kofie’s work is very deliberate, yet expressionistic. Hip hop has created a platform for a global youth culture and it’s always fascinating to see different art-forms merge.

Another inspiration was seeing the film “War Photographer” and being exposed to the deeply moving documentary photography of James Nachtwey. He braves the battlefields and streets to capture the human condition and the stories behind them. His photos are morbidly beautiful and intimate–art with a conscience.
