Trapped Artwork

I feel very fortunate to have made the acquaintance of Purple Reign, a real-life superhero taking a stand against Domestic Violence, Crime, Abuse, and Bullying. She featured my “Trapped” artwork with a Q/A article on her site.

Purple Reign’s inspiring campaign on DV encourages people of all backgrounds to be a hero and speak out against abuse. “Everyone has their own unique talents and abilities and we love to see people using them to make a difference in their community whether it is through art, music, poetry, culinary talents, or even offering service and labor.” More here.

Article: Change Fonts to Save Money

Typographic Calender

Every font is designed with varying thicknesses and sizes, so there’s more ink consumption for a thicker font. There’s no simple rule–every case is different, but changing fonts to save a little money can help in the long run.

Serif fonts (like Times Roman, with the tiny legs on the letters) fare better than their Sans Serif counterparts (Arial, for example) on an economical level. For less text, Century Gothic takes less ink than Arial. More info on Yahoo.

News: Disney Buys Marvel and its 5,000 Characters

Disney purchases Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. From a marketing perspective, this is a very interesting buy, as this will enable Disney to gain a wider (male) audience. Disney has a strong appeal to young girls (princesses and magic castles) through its depth of global licensing and technology. With the acquisition of Marvel, they could market to a older demo–Marvel has a “coolness” that Disney does not. “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Nightmare Before Christmas” were successful for Disney in reaching different audiences, but Marvel will be key to retaining the young audience through adulthood via the numerous well-loved superhero characters and depth of story-telling. For Marvel, the licensing and distribution of characters and products will be easier through different venues. I’m sure we’ll soon see the X-men or Spiderman as a theme park ride.

Monica Dengo's Calligraphy

The calligraphic works of Monica Dengo is an inspiration into the possibilities of the written word. I took a class from her a few years back while she was in San Francisco. My interest in lettering stemmed from graffiti and her techniques helped me understand the traditional aspects of lettering.

On Monica’s site, she has a small, fascinating article on the “differences between graphic, calligraphic and gestural free approach of handwriting.” Read more.
